Chhapak, milestone for Deepika Padukone
Chhapaak (2020)
Candidly, Chhapaak is the first-ever Bollywood movie that I have watched in the theatre that too first day of the release. All this is just because of inquisitiveness in the film after Deepika Padukone entered into the limelight by announcing that she portrays the role of an acid-attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, an invincible lady who has changed the perception and definition of beauty and life.
The commendable thing about this well-known script is that the concept of surviving after a major attack on one’s self that eventually hindrance the growth and strength of the victim unimaginably.
Let us get into the incites of the story, Malathi Agarwal, an innocent school going student who wishes to become an Indian idol singer but never thought that she could meet with this unexpected threat in her life one day.
Bappu alias Bashir khan, who is a tailor as well as a distant relative of Malathi. Though he is much elder to Malathi craved for her because of beauty.
Malathi treated him like an elder brother but this psychotic fellow tortured her with messages but she never tells this to anybody about him as she thought that nobody would listen to her.
Meanwhile, Malathi is in a relationship with Rajesh who studies nearby school. Their friendship and togetherness made Bappu went extreme where he thought to destroy the life of her and he did that with supportive of one female friend by throwing acid on the face of Malathi.
After the incident, it takes years to get recuperated from marks and she went through seven surgeries despite being a middle-class family.
Archana Bajaj, a senior advocate and her team behind Malathi since the happening of the incident who played key roles in bringing justice to her.
In the aftermath of the Incident, Malathi has to take responsibility for the family because of financial instability in the home since her father is an alcoholic and brother suffers from tuberculosis. For that, she tired of searching for jobs as she couldn’t get through even one because of her surgery face.
Amol Trivedi who runs an NGO against Acid attacks on minor girls with the slogan “STOP ACID ATTACKS”. so she meets him in search of one job with the help of a journalist. Before joining Trivedi, She filed a PIL against acid selling to curtail the sale of acids so that they can mitigate the acid attacks so that’s where Amol and Malathi become good friends shortly. In this process, eventually, both fell into love because of similar ideologies.
Then how Malathi wins life despite suffering forms the rest of the story.
Coming to the review, we, as the audience may not be able to forecast the theme of the movie until the culmination as we might think that there exist massive hue and cry after she had happened to meet with this heinous attack.
But the director Meghna Gulzar dealt more subtly with the script as she might think that it should not be the mundane one like any other biographies so she narrated in a slow pace mode by highlighting the scenes which are more substantial to sinks in.
Coming to the performances of the artists, Deepika Padukone nailed the role as she totally into the place of Laxmi where we can’t imagine any other heroine for this character.
One of the striking performances in the film was Madhurjeet Sarghi who played the role of Archana Bajaj, a supreme court lawyer who was crux in bringing the right kind of justice in Laxmi’s case as well as for the approval of regulating acid sales.
“Lootera” actor Vikrant Massey played the meaty role as Alok Dixit who runs an NGO against acid attacks on minor girls with the slogan “STOP ACID ATTACKS” Though he quintessentially fits in the character I felt that character is not creating that much impact among the audience.
Pros
- Deepika as Malathi as well as other artists in the film
- Concept
- Background Music
Cons
- Screenplay
- Disengaging
- Lacking impact
Overall, the director made the film to showcase the spirit and strength of Laxmi Agarwal despite traumatic situations through Malathi’s character but purely failed to engage the audience till the end of the play.
